Hyderabadi Khatti Dal

Khatti Dal is a food originating in South Asia and central to Hyderabadi cuisine. The Urdu word khatti literally means “sour”. It refers to the tangy taste which is essential to the dish brought about by adding tamarind. At Mr. Idli we make sure the Khatti Dal is prepared in a way in which a grandmother would prepare at Hyderabad.


  • Ghee
  • Hing
  • Dry Red Chilli
  • Finely Chopped Garlic
  • Curry Leaves
  • Cumin Seeds
  • Chopped Green Chillies
  • Dal
  • Tamarind Paste
  • Coriander Powder
  • Red Chilli Powder
  • Turmeric Powder
  • Purified Mineral Water
  • Sea Salt


  • In a fry pan add ghee, hing, dry red chilli, curry leaves, cumin seeds, finely chopped garlic, and finely chopped green chillies.
  • Add dal, coriander power, red chilli powder & turmeric powder. Cook for a 1 min.
  • Add tamarind paste & cook further for 2 mins. Add purified mineral water as per the required consistency.
  • Add salt as per the taste and simmer for 2 mins before serving. Enjoy with steamed hot rice with ghee to enjoy the taste.
